| Jilly finally peer pressured me to get a myspace account. I'm going to try to keep them both current. I'm not really sure how I'm going to do that since I hardly even blog here as it is :o) Anyway....the address is www.myspace.com/marshemella | | |
| I hadn't updated in a while, so I thought it was time :o) School is still keeping me pretty busy, but I've finally found a way to balance school, work, and sleep so that I don't feel like I'm living my life in a fog. Since my last post, my oldest dog died. It was very sad, but he was really old, and we kind of expected it. I really do miss him, but there are 3 other dogs here, so they keep me pretty occupied. My nieces are still really cute. You can check out my facebook for recent pictures of how stunning the are :o) I'm going to Florida the week before Christmas. My brother called and said that Marty (that's my niece) won't be able to go to daycare the week before Christmas because the facility is closed, and that they'd rather give me an all expense paid trip to Ft. Myers, FL to keep her for 1/2 a day for the week than take off of work. What idiot would say no to that? While it is an awesome deal, I really plan on using the time to not only get to know my niece, but to reconstruct the relationship between my brother and I (long story for another post). So I'm off to Ft. Myers the week before Christmas. How's that for a random collection of facts... | | |
| Lots of things have happened since my last post. I went to LA. That was fun. Check out my facebook for pictures from that excursion. I started grad school last week. It's actually not as scary as I thought it would be. One thing that I didn't expect, and I'm kinda disappointed about is the amount of group work I have. I really don't like group work because: 1) I don't like anyone else to be able to manage my time, and 2) I'm always the only one in the group that has done the assignment (correctly). In one of my classes, we acutally have group quizzes. That's very unfortunate. To pay for school, I got a grad assistantship. I have the coolest boss ever, and I'm really looking forward to working with her. I actually get to be the webmaster for her website. I've never been the master of anything before, so I'm pretty stoked. All in all...life has been busy, but good. | | |
| So
I'm almost finished with my last official day at STAR. My
co-workers had lunch with me at O'Charley's. I thought that was
really nice of them. One of them actually called my dad, and he
and my sister came down to celebrate with us. I feel really good
about the time I've spent here, and I think that I really have made a
difference to the people I have helped. I've learned so much
about myself, which I guess is to be expected since this was my first
'real' job. The CEO and her husband also came to lunch with
us. I was very surprised. It's looking more and more like
I'll be able to continue working for STAR in Memphis (albeit in a much
smaller capacity.) While this was a killer first job, it was
exactly that...a first job. I'm not ready to end the book on my
music therapy career, but I am ready to at least finish the first
chapter. Grad school here I come! (After LA of course ;))

| Alright...So I spent Friday and Saturday in Nashville at a National Batten Disease conference. If you've never heard of Batten Disease, I suggest you look it up. It's pretty rare and very vicious. One of the first most devastating manifestations of the disease is that the person begins to lose their sight. What amazed me was how taken with color all of the kids were. We did all different types of crafts, and they always wanted us to tell them what color the media was...interesting...
It was the job of 2 art therapists, 2 music therapists, and a music therapy intern to provide music and art therapy for 30-35 affected children along with 8-10 unaffected 3-5 year olds for 12 hours. It was a little taxing.
By far my favorite quote happened while talking to a 15 year old girl. On this particular day, she and another boy talked for at least 2 hours. They were obviously smitten with each other because we couldn't get either of them to do anything else. When he left, I went to talk to her until her mother came to get her. The conversation went something like this:
"Marshetta, what does it mean to blush?"
"It means that your face turns pink like it is now."
"Do you think I'm pretty?"
"Yes. I think you're very pretty."
"Can boys be pretty?"
"We call boys handsome."
"Why do boys that are handsome make my face turn pink?"
This post is in purple because all of the girls (and most of the boys) we served this weekend chose it as their favorite color. | | |
